1859 - retired as surgeon-major; on voyage from India collected a variety of marine organisms. His reports on those collections led to his appointment as naturalist in HMS Bulldog in 1860. During that voyage he devised a sounder clam for deep-sea samples to a depth of over 2,000 metres.

1862 - published 'The North-Atlantic Sea-Bed', in which he refutated Edward Forbes' ‘azoic theory’, that marine life exists beyond a few hundred metres.
