There is some uncertainty surrounding the identity of Mesue. Mesue Junior (926-1016) was probably a fictional character and pseudonym for pharmaceutical writings. Mesue Senior (777-857 CE) was a Christian physician who wrote in Arabic. He dissected apes to investigate anatomy, and was personal physician to four caliphs.
