Grand Trunk Railway 1852 - 1923

Nationality:
American

Originally incorporated in 1852 as the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada. During its life it operated in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario, as well as the American states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. It was operated from headquarters in Montreal, Quebec but its corporate headquarters were in London, England. Its subsidiaries were the Central Vermont Railway, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad and the never completed Southern New England Railway. In later years, the GTR suffered serious financial difficulties, causing the GTPR to be nationalised in 1919 and the rest of GTR to be absorbed into Canadian National Railways in 1923.
