Black and white documentary film with sound produced by Shell Film Unit of the Shell Petroleum Company.

The film contains a comparison of different forms of railway traction: steam, electricity, gas turbine and diesel-electric and the design, building and trials of a direct drive diesel mechanical locomotive in addition to animated diagrams illustrating how the direct drive works. Contains footage from a platform and the moving locomotive. Possibly relates to Cantlie's work with the Locomotive Manufacturers Association (LMA) promoting British rail industry as an overseas representative in early 1950s.

This VHS cassette is a transfer from a film copy, possibly made in the 1980s.
