Amuletic necklace, west Africa, 1880-1920

An amuletic necklace from West Africa with small leather charm cases incised with decoration and strung on a leather thong. Charm cases often contain folded talismans - a piece of writing or drawing with meaning for the individual patient. The talismans are unique and are produced in response to the particular situation believed to be causing ill health.
