Adjustable bed rest, 18th century

This wooden bed rest could be used to support the back of a person who has been confined to bed for medical reasons. It has nine different positions and is adjusted using a ratchet – a ratchet is a set of teeth on the edge of the support bars which ensures the rest stays in the same position. This example is made from walnut and has a padded leather base.
