Madras dhooley, or portable hospital tent, 1/12 scale model, wooden, carried by two men, early 20th century

Known as a dhooley in Madras (now Chennai), south-east India, the portable hospital tent was carried by two or four men or pulled by horses. It is likely that full-size tents of this design would have been used by the British military when stationed in India.

Patients sat or were placed on stretchers inside and the journey would have been slow and uncomfortable. Made from canvas with wooden supports and carrying poles, a life-size dhooley would be twelve times larger.
