Medicine pouch with contents, by Bach and Riedel of Berlin, used in German Army, First World War
This leather pouch contains first aid equipment – bandages and a number of medical treatments. Made by a Berlin-based company, Bach & Riedel, the kit was used by medics in the German Army during the First World War.
Drugs in the pouch include tincture of opium – a tincture is an alcoholic solution of a drug. Opium, extracted from poppies, was used to induce sleep and as a painkiller but could be highly addictive.
