Inhalers administered medicines directly into the lungs of people with asthma. This lung condition causes shortness of breath. Treatments placed in the rubber bulb were breathed in through a mouthpiece or nose piece.

This example was made by Rybar Laboratories Ltd. in England. Rybar inhalers were sold into the 1960s. They were also available on the National Health Service. They were succeeded by devices delivering a measured dose.
