Printed Esmarch triangular bandage, cloth, British, 1890-1910
Friedrich von Esmarch (1823-1908) was a German surgeon who used his experiences on the battlefield to contribute to improving techniques in military surgery and first aid. He developed this printed triangular bandage in the 1870s. It conveniently illustrates fifty different ways of applying and using the bandage, which could also be used as part of a tourniquet or to hold together a splint to stabilise a broken limb.
