Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Emsworth halfpenny, 1795. (DH Hants 30). Honouring Earl Howe and battle 1 June 1794. Issuer Unknown, 1795, ½d. Obverse A small sailing ship: ‘The wooden walls of old England’. Reverse Bust of Earl Howe: ‘Earl Howe & the First of June 1974. Halfpenny 1795’. Notes The token commemorates the battle between the French and British fleets on 1st June 1794, when the French were beaten. Howe was the British Admiral. He was later criticised for allowing a convoy of French merchant ships from America to escape while he fought the battle.
