Token, copper, 26mm diameter. London halfpenny, 1795. (DH Mddx 904). Issuer William Stinton, grocer, 1795. Obverse A grasshopper: ‘Fine teas of the rough flavour’. Reverse ‘Wm. Stinton. St James’ Street London. Patent cocao (sic) warehouse 1795’. Notes Cocoa is made from the seeds of the cacao plant bean. The spelling ‘cocao’ was current in 1795. The grasshopper was a symbol commonly used by grocers.
