Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Wilkinson halfpenny, 1790. (DH Warwks 388). Issuer John Wilkinson, 1790, ½d. (Also issued 1787, 1788, 1792, 1793 and 1795.) Obverse Bust of Wilkinson, ‘John Wilkinson Iron Master’. Reverse Man at forge using a trip hammer. Notes Wilkinson was one of the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution. An energetic and forceful man, he was responsible for important innovations in ironmaking and shaping, including a boring mill which enabled James Watt to develop his separate condenser steam engine.
