Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Middlesex token, Newgate, 1795. (DH Mddx 396b). Issuer Unknown, 1795. Obverse View of Newgate Prison: ‘Newgate 1795’. Reverse ‘Payable at the residence of Messrs Symonds, Winterbotham, Ridgway & Holt’. Notes This token records the imprisonment of the four named men, for sedition, in 1794. The reference to ‘payable’ is, of course, satirical, the ‘residence’ being Newgate prison. Other tokens similar to this one were issued, sometimes by people whose names appeared on the edges.
