Token in copper, 33mm diameter. Known as "Sedition Penny". Issued by the Anti-Republican Party in Birmingham, July 14 1791. obverse: Figure of Monster, with flag of Faction; "Our food is Sedition". Reverse: "Nourished toTorment"; Snake in grass intended for Joseph Priestley. The circulation of these much incensed the feeling against Priestley which culminated in the destruction of his house by the mob (ex-Gabb, NMM, V.68)
