Tobacco pipe with painted porcelain bowl, German, 1820-1860
Shredded tobacco would have been placed in the porcelain bowl, lit and the smoke inhaled through the cherry wood stem and horn mouthpiece. The bowl is illustrated with the painted figure of a young woman – a highly popular subject among pipe makers, who were catering for an almost exclusively male market. Despite its age, the pipe still smells slightly of tobacco.
