A photograph of an inmate of Pentonville Prison, London, making carpets or matting on a loom, taken by Captain Lewis in 1871. This man sits at his loom dressed in prison uniform. Around him are arranged the basic contents of his cell, a mattress, stool and table for books and other items. Propped at the back of the table is a list of rules and regulations for working in the prison.
