Mechanical horse, Karrier "Cob", London Midland & Scottish Railways, built 1929, Reg No UR 9869. Derived from a three-wheeled dustcart, the Karrier Cob was adopted by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS). The railway companies built up vast fleets of road vehicles, which they used to deliver goods that had been transported by rail. These little trucks were light, manoeuvrable and gradually took over from horses. Designed to meet the specific requirements for replacing horses, this "Cob" was an effective and well-used vehicle, built for the working environment of the goods yard and goods station.
