A City of York Council sign for 'Railway Street', removed when it was renamed 'George Hudson Street' in 1971.
In the 1840s a York street was named after George Hudson, the local businessman who dominated the region's railway companies and helped make York a major railway centre. When Hudson spectacularly fell from power in 1849 amid a series of financial scandals, the road was renamed Railway Street.
In 1971, the centenary of Hudson's death, York City Council decided to name it George Hudson street once again. This twentieth century sign for Railway Street was removed and preserved by British Rail.
