Broadcast Radio Receiver, Model 444, Philco Corporation, USA. c. 1936.

The Philco Model 444 radio receiver was made in 1936 by Philco UK, a subsidiary of the American battery, radio, and television manufacturer Philco Corporation (1892-1974). Known as ‘The People’s Set’ due to its comparatively lower price, Model 444 was a response to criticisms made against British radio manufacturers that their unaffordable prices limited who could enjoy radio broadcasts. Though still expensive (costing £6, approximately over £300 today) the tabletop device was made of moulded Bakelite with a central speaker panel covered in fabric, volume and wave band known as well as a tuning dial.
