Refracting five-draw telescope made by Christopher Cock, Long Acre, London, 1673. Inscribed ‘Christopher Cock Londini 1673’. The tube is decorated in gold designs on red vellum and features a royal coat of arms.

This telescope, made for terrestrial (rather than astronomical) use was made by one of London’s leading optical instrument makers, Christopher Cock. It contains three lenses and the focal length of the object glass is 90cm. Cock is known to have supplied instruments to Robert Hooke, Curator of Experiments at the Royal Society.
