"As Above, So Below", wood carving symbolic of the ideas of G.I.Gurgjieff, with three levels: Methane Molecule, Perfected Man, the Trinity. By Professor M. W. Thring.

This model is a carving by Professor Thring entitled, As Above, So Below. In Professor Thring's view, the only humane way to halt the rise of world population would be to give all mankind a decent standard of living and an adequate education, to bring the per capita use of the earth's resources to about the same level all over the world. At the time of formulating this idea, he recommended that the rich countries should cut consumption to one third of the then current levels, and the poor countries should be brought up to this level. He argued for a reassessment of the criteria for success in life, with greater emphasis being placed on 'creative self-fulfilment' rather than material gain. He attempted to put his ideas into practice not only in his work with Third World communities but also in his wood carvings.
