14 hp vertical, single-cylinder, Marshall Steam Engine (made by Messrs. Marshall of Gainsborough, for Imperial Institute in 1891 and transferred to Kew Gardens in 1903)

This very fine engine was built by Marshall, Sons and Company of Gainsborough, the prominent and prolific steam engine and machinery manufacturers. Marshall became major exporters of their products, thanks to the quality embodied in items like this engine: this 'short stroke' engine combines elegance and sturdiness in a compact self-contained form.
