Painting once said to be of [Luke Howard] (1772-1864), meteorologist, chemist from comparison with other likenesses, since also attributed to likeness of Joseph Jewell (fl. 1870). [oil on paper] Pencil, oil and colour wash, heightened with white, on buff paper folded over wood panel; 16 x 13 cm. Signed and inscribed top left in red: Joseph Jewell. Aet 70. Reverse margin inscribed in ink in 19th century hand: From the original painted by J S H (J W H?) Handley RA (fl1827-1846) pub. J J Penstone. [1840-1860]. (Handley exhibited several anonymous sitters' portraits.) Featuring a man HS facing front, wearing Quaker hat. Acquired with assorted papers relating to Luke Howard, attribution as his portrait made by auction house catalogue (1977-895/2, SM Library MS2005).
