Combined compass and clinometer in Captain Burnier's design, made by Bulbreck the elder of Paris, mid 19th century

The inscription engraved on the top of this instrument designed by Captain Burnier reads; 'Balbreck aine Consteur / 81 Bart, Montparnasse / Paris'. Magnetic compasses are portable and easy to use for rapid surveying where high accuracy is not required. The compass disk and clinometer plate are enclosed in a brass case.
