Pedometer or waywiser with fob hook, made by Spencer & Perkins, 1775-1794.
Pedometers counted a wearer’s paces and provided an estimate of distance walked. This pedometer, made by the London watchmaking firm Spencer & Perkins, was hooked over a belt or strap and the user’s steps registered by a weighted mechanism inside the watch case.
While instruments such as these may have had a useful and practical purpose – for example for a landowner to determine quickly the size of their estate – they were also desirable novelties at a time when demand was growing for devices for entertainment and leisure.
