Glass plate, 44 x 44 mm, with paper label stuck along the bottom marked in manuscript 'Diffraction grating made by / Lord Rayleigh' and with a different pen 'PRS. 1878'. The plate produces no detectable diffraction phenomena but there are deposits on the back of the plate some of which could be remnants of a photographic emulsion.
