Bronze Exchequer Standard Winchester Gallon Measure, dated 1601. One of a series issued to 60 cities in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Gallon measure, dated 1601 made at the command of Elizabeth, I, Queen of England (1533-1603) as a volume standard for England. Copies of these Exchequer standards were issued to boroughs throughout England to encourage and enforce fair trade in commerce. This standard was so successful that it was not superseded until 1824 when new more accurate measures were required by the statute the Imperial Measures Act.
