Two freeze dried male transgenic mice (nos 1134 and 1136) that are direct descendents of the first mammals to be granted a US patent, #4,736,866 dated 12 April 1988

The Harvard Mouse, or OncoMouse was a strain of mice created by inserting a gene from a virus into the DNA of mouse embryos. The resulting mice and their progeny were used in cancer research, because they were much more susceptible to cancer than normal mice.

The very first transgenic animal was also a mouse, again created with virus DNA, in 1974.
