Rectangular pane of glass with engraved inscription, dated September 11, 1857. The dedication indicates that it was presented to Sir John W. Herschel by Warren De la Rue. The commemorative plate is thought to an off-cut from one of the original collodion plates used by De la Rue to take his early photographs of the Moon.
