Cerebro-spinal manometers measure the pressure of cerebro-spinal fluid. This is the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. The needle is inserted through the patient’s back and the resulting height of the fluid in the bore indicates the pressure.

Disturbances in volume, pressure or constituents of cerebro-spinal fluid can affect the brain and are indicative of a number of medical problems. Such disturbances can result in behavioural changes as well as physical effects.
