Tinder-box (length 10 5/8 ins) of wood; rectangular; two compartments; corners strengthened by clamps of ivory; exterior handsomely ribbed, owing to softer parts of the wood having been rubbed away; believed to be more than three hundred years old; made by Chikusai, whose name is on the damper in raised ivory letters; the handle of the damper is a bear's tooth; the carving on the lid is from a poem by Basho, one of Japan's great poets, which is sung when the rice is being sown.
