Great Central Railway Extension to London Contract No. 1 - album of photographs showing the construction of the first stage of the GCR's extension into London, from the Kirkby Tunnel through Nottingham to the Leake Tunnel, where contract no. 2 began. The album was commissioned by the contractors Logan & Hemingway of Nottingham, and the photography and arrangement was carried out by S.W.A. Newton of Leicester. The photographs show the construction work, bridges, tunnels, cuttings, local sights and buildings etc., with a map of the route and detailed maps of the line through Nottingham. The album was presented to Ralph A. Wilde of the GCR by Charles R. Hemingway of Logan & Hemingway in 1898. A 1914 portrait photograph of Hemingway has been inserted in the front. Also inserted is a set of small prints of the GCR Gotham Branch for which Logan & Hemingway were also the contractors.
