Urine testing pack for chlamydia, issued as part of the NHS chlamydia screening programme 'Check Urself' campaign aimed at 15 - 24 year olds, Britain, 2009.

‘Check Urself’ is a nationwide Chlamydia screening programme aimed at 15-24 year-olds. This testing pack was issued as part of it and contains information on the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia, and a urine sample bottle. Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis and is spread between partners during unprotected sex. The most commonly diagnosed STI in the UK, chlamydia is often referred to as the ‘silent’ disease because it displays no obvious symptoms. One in ten people under 25 are infected.

Chlamydia can lead to the more serious pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women if left undiagnosed. This can increase the risk of miscarriage or infertility. Chlamydia is detected by a simple swab test or urine sample. This is sent in the envelope included in the pack to a confidential NHS testing department.
