Magic Lantern Chromatrope Slide: mice and cheese, c. 1870
The Kodak Collection at the National Media Museum, Bradford
Science Museum Group Collection

Gear-type lantern slide of a cat chasing mice over a table, with a chromatrope border.

A hand-painted chromatrope slide showing two mice on a table, made by an unknown artist in 1870.

The slide shows two mice, a jug and a wedge of cheese on a table top.

The kaleidoscopic element revolves around the central scene. The table scene and one set of geometric patterns are painted on a fixed glass slide while further geometric patterns are painted on another circular glass slide which is mounted in a toothed brass rim and turned by a pinion wheel attached to a handle at the side of the slide.
