A silhouette of a boy named Charlie, aged fourteen and a half years, created by an unknown artist on 10 February 1844.
The silhouette has been given added detail with drawing and highlighting. Charlie's hair, for example, has been highlighted in gold to show his curls.
Silhouettes became popular in Britain in the late 1700s. They were named after Etienne de Silhouette (1709-1767), a French finance minister and amateur profile artist.
