The photograph was taken just after Harvey had taken the British light heavyweight title from reigning champion Eddie Phillips. Harvey is regarded as one of the finest British boxers of all time. During his long career he was, at various times, British middle, light-heavy and heavyweight champion between 1929 and 1942. In this bout he beat reigning light heavyweight champion Eddie Phillips.
