A photograph of children and staff at the window of a children's home, taken by Malindine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 20 December, 1938.

A photograph of children and staff at the window of a children's home, taken in December 1938 by Edward G Malindine for the Daily Herald.

The photograph was taken at the National Children's Adoption Association's home at Sydenham, south London. This home placed, on average, one child with adoptive parents every day. This high rate was due in part to the high rate of children being placed into adoption, this rate falling later in the century due to improved methods of birth control, and changing attitudes towards illegitimacy and single parent families.
