A photograph entitled 'Saltmarket, from Bridgegate', taken by Thomas Annan in 1868.

The photograph shows a view of Saltmarket Street from Bridgegate (or Briggait) in Glasgow. Crowds of people line the streets, watching Annan as he takes his photograph. Bridgegate was home to many of the city's merchants until trade moved west and the area became one of many slum areas in the east end of Glasgow.

In 1868 the City of Glasgow Improvement Trust approached Thomas Annan to take photographs of some of the slum areas of the city prior to demolition. The resulting images are some of the earliest examples of documentary photography.
