A magic lantern slipping slide depicting a man with wet paint on his back, made by an unknown artist in 1870.

A slipping slide consists of two pieces of glass - both painted with different stages of a movement. Black patches painted on the movable, or 'slipping', slide alternately cover and uncover the stages of movement.

The first slide shows the man leaning against the railings, ignoring the 'Wet Paint' sign written on the pavement.
