Bust of Sir William Fairbairn, sculpted by Thomas Woolner, 1875. Sir William Fairbairn was a founder in 1854-5 of the Manchester Steam Users' Association for the Prevention of Boiler Explosions and For the Attainment of Economy in the Application of Steam. He served as President of the Association from 1858 until his death in 1874 at the age of 85.
