'Leesona' pirn winder, made by the Universal Winding Co., Boston, USA.
This machine wound yarn onto wooden rods called pirns. These fitted inside the shuttles weavers used on their looms. One weaving shed could go through over one million pirns per week. Quality cloth relied on well wound pirns, so workers had to be skilled at using the machines.
