Brooks, Roy

Roy Brooks is an author and journalist who writes on the history of the motor car and has worked as a motoring correspondent for a number of regional newspapers including the Bolton News and the Bury Times. Brooks was the head of motor vehicle courses at Bolton College of Education between 1955 and 1967, before moving to Bolton Technical Teachers' Training College where he trained teachers of Motor Vehicle courses until 1985.

In 1966, Brooks organised the first ever public Owner Drivers’ Maintenance Course for Rolls-Royce Owner Drivers. It attracted worldwide attention and led directly to the formation of the Northern Section of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club, the first such section of that organisation.

From 1971, he published volumes in the Motor Vehicle Craft series with Macmillan.

In 1978, Brooks began studying for a Master's degree at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1979 with his thesis on The Motor Car Coachwork of Joseph Cockshoot & Co.

Brooks was also chairman of the Worldwide Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club from 1988 to 1991.

In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Bolton University for his outstanding contribution to automotive engineering.
