Lord, Dorothy

Nationality:
British

Dorothy Lord was an in-house fashion designer for the Manchester-based company, Walmer Manufacturing. Her real name was Doris Churchman, but the collection was so named because her manager always called her Dorothy and her maiden name was Lord. The collection features promotional material for her line of lingerie and nightwear known as the 'Dorothy Lord Collection'. The garments make use of synthetic materials in a glamorous and sophisticated way. It can be suggested that by using 'Dorothy Lord' as a signature name the company were marketing an aspirational quality suggested by well-known women fashion designers such as Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli. Walmer Manufacturing Co. Ltd. originally made parachutes during the Second World War.
