1801 - obtained a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

1808-1812 - rode over extensive areas of south-west and midlands of England, collecting rocks and fossils.

1813 – became reader in mineralogy.

1818 – became first reader in geology.

1821 – excavated Kirkdale Caves, North Yorkshire.

1822 – Kirkdale Caves excavation earns him Royal Society’s Copley medal.

1825 – founding member of the Zoological Society of London.

1848 - became a fellow of the Royal Society
