Auto Carriers (1911) Ltd

Auto Carriers, were one of Britain's oldest specialist automobile manufacturers. They were listed as Auto Carriers Ltd in 1911 when they moved to premises at the Ferry Works in Thames Ditton, Surrey. The company started in 1903 when the first AC automobile was presented at Crystal Palace motor show - it was displayed under the Weller Brothers name. Their financial backer thought it would be too expensive to produce and encouraged them to design a three wheeler - this was called Auto-Carrier and a new company (Autocars and Accessories) was founded.

Production started in 1904 with the three-wheeled vehicle which used a single cylinder engine and had tiller steering. The first four-wheeler was produced in 1913; it was a two seater with a gearbox on the back axel. Only few were produced as production was interrupted by the First World War. After the war in 1919 John Weller designed a new 6 cylinder motor, known as the Weller Motor, it would be produced until 1963.

In 1922 Selwyn Edge gained full control of the company and the name changed to AC Cars Ltd. In 1929 the financial crash had taken its toll on the company and it went into voluntary liquidation. Production ceased in 1930 and the company sold to the Hurlock family.
