Formed in 1929 from the merger of several companies operating on the Manchester Coalfield, including Fletcher, Burrows and Company, Andrew Knowles and Sons, the Clifton and Kersley Coal Company, John Speakman and Sons, Bridgewater Collieries and the Astley and Tyldesley Collieries Company.

Nationalised in 1947.
