After the American Civil War, worked in Hydrographic office, discovered the Sigsbee Deep, the deepest water in the Gulf of Mexico. Invented deep-sea sounding and sampling devices.

Sigsbee commanded the battleship MAINE when she exploded in Havana harbor in February of 1898: one of the catalysts for the Spanish American War.
