R. C. Mansell was the designer of a disc wheel in 1848 which became standard on passenger trains and some freight trains until the arrival of the modern steel disc wheel. The wheel reduced noise dramatically. He was also the Carriage and Wagon Superintendent of the South Eastern Railway between 1876-78.
