In 1880 NER began to search for a site on which to locate the carriage works, and by 1881 work had begun on the Holgate Road site in York. In 1884 the new works were opened and all NER coach building was undertaken at the site. After grouping, in 1923, the works became the main site of production for LNER. The works survived until 1996 when they were closed down.
